Frequently Asked Questions

What do we compost?

Check out our Compost 101 guide to see what can and cannot go in your bucket.

Keeping trash, plastic, and other non-compostables out of your bucket makes it easier to produce quality compost! If you have any questions about a certain item, please contact us! This helps us expand our list and helps other customers as well.

What if I’m not in your service area?

Down To Earth Composting now offers a self-serve, unlimited (within reason) drop-off program! You can learn more about the details and let us know if you have any questions.

What if I live in an apartment?

This usually isn’t a problem. If your apartment door is publicly accessible, our riders will pick your bucket up from your doorstep. If you live in a gated community, just let us know the access instructions and we’ll work our magic.

When do you pick up my bucket?

Anytime between 5am and 5pm on your scheduled collection day. Because of changes in weather and Rot Rider availability, we’ll likely visit your house at a different time each collection day, so please have your bucket by 5am in case you are on one of our early-bird riders’ routes!

What if I forget to put my bucket out?

Unfortunately, if your bucket is not out when our rider gets to your house on the scheduled pick up day, we will not be able to come back to pick it up.

If you have a full bucket and need it emptied before the next week you can empty your bin at one of our drop-off points.

Sometimes we do make mistakes, if your bucket was out but we missed it for some reason please let us know and we will get you a clean bucket by the following day.

What if I’m out of town?

If you will be out of town we do appreciate a heads up, so that we can skip your house for the week and save some calories for our riders.

Do I get compost back? When?

Yep! Twice a year, once in early spring, and again in early fall, weekly collection members have the option to receive up to 20 gallons of finished compost for their indoor and outdoor gardening needs.

Due to the logistics of delivery, we do not currently offer finished compost to our drop-off members.

What if I can’t use finished compost?

You can donate your share to someone in our service area or just simply say no thanks!

Can I share the bucket with a neighbor?

It’s OK to share your bucket with friends/neighbors as long as there is only one credit card per account and the bucket is placed in the same spot every week.

Do you serve commercial businesses?

Nope, not at this time!
